Darlene Jones began to pursue music seriously after a brush with cancer in 2010. Her first keyboard was from a yard-sale, but she soon bought a Kawai baby grand and set about dedicated study in piano. She studied with several local piano teachers, ultimately finding a good match with Cathy Pescevich Kreplin of Ascencion Music in the summer of 2014. Cathy immediately recognized not just Darlene’s love of piano but her interest in music theory and, ultimately, her natural ability with teaching. Throughout 2015 and 2016, Darlene actively pursued courses of study to become a teacher of both beginning piano and young children’s general music. In 2017, she earned both her “Excellence in Piano Teaching” certificate and her MusikGarten certification.
In the spring of 2015, Darlene joined Ascencion Music in Kill Devil Hills as a staff music teacher. A a Certified MusikGarten teacher, she teaches group music lessons for children from infancy through age 7. As well, Darlene offers beginner piano training for students of all ages. Darlene regularly plays for the enjoyment of patients waiting in the lobby of the Outer Banks Hospital. She pursues continuing music education in the form of ongoing private piano and pedagogy lessons, as well as through her active membership in both MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) and NCMTA (North Carolina Music Teachers Association).
Darlene’s first career was as a nurse, from 1974 until her retirement early in 2016. She holds national certifications in pediatrics, trauma, critical care, and emergency nursing; she was employed as a registered nurse in the emergency department of a local hospital at the time of her retirement. Her passion for piano is surpassed only by her love for Dave Jones, her husband of 40 years; her daughter, Sara; and her 4 grandchildren, Hannah, Issac, Mark and Esther. Darlene resides in Kitty Hawk on a 4 acre farm. For more information about young children’s music programs, or to book private beginner piano lessons, please call 252-955-0706.
